PRF Hair Treatment: Supporting Hair Health Naturally
PRP and PRF hair treatments are non-surgical options that use your own blood's biological components, applied to the scalp via injection. The growth factors involved are understood to play a role in the body's natural processes around hair follicles and scalp circulation.

Some individuals consider this treatment for concerns relating to hair thinning or density, including those associated with hormonal changes such as thyroid conditions or menopause — though any underlying medical condition should be discussed with and managed by your treating doctor. PRF is not a substitute for medical treatment of an underlying condition.

Individual responses vary, and a course of sessions is generally recommended. It is recommended to speak with your primary physician to help identify whether this treatment may be suitable for you alongside any other care you're receiving.

Who May Be Suitable
A consultation is required to assess suitability. Concerns that may be discussed include:
-
Hair thinning or increased shedding
-
Receding hairline
-
Alopecia areata (bald patches)
-
Androgenic alopecia (patterned hair loss)
-
Hair loss associated with hormonal or thyroid changes
-
Those seeking a non-surgical option before exploring other interventions
Hair loss has many possible contributing factors including hormones, genetics, medication, or other medical conditions. A consultation will help identify what may be relevant to your situation.
About Alopecia Areata
PRF and micro-needling with LED is referenced by the Australian Alopecia Areata Foundation as a treatment option for some individuals with alopecia areata. For more advanced presentations (such as totalis), medical clearance from your treating practitioner is required before commencing treatment. If you have recently been diagnosed with alopecia and would like peer support resources, visit the AAAF website at aaaf.org.au.

Androgenic Alopecia & Alopecia Areata: What the Research Says
A meta-analysis and systematic review examined PRP for androgenic alopecia and reported improvements in hair density among some participants (Hausser & Jones, 2019). For individuals who have experienced side effects from hair regrowth medications, PRP is one option that may be discussed with your treating doctor as part of a broader management plan.
This systematic review examines injectable PRF therapy in relation to alopecia and facial rejuvenation, providing an analysis of existing studies.

What's Involved
At your appointment, a thorough consultation takes place to assess suitability. With doctor oversight, blood is collected and processed in a TGA-registered centrifuge. The scalp is cleansed, micro-needling is performed, PRF meso-injections are administered, and the session finishes with LED. Treatment time is approximately 90 minutes.
A minimum of three sessions is generally recommended to initiate the hair growth cycle. A fourth review session is usually recommended at six months to assess individual response and plan any ongoing maintenance. Treatment intervals are tailored to each person.

How PRP/PRF Works
PRP treatment involves drawing a small amount of blood from a vein, usually in the arm. The blood is processed in a centrifuge to separate the platelets and plasma from the red blood cells. The red blood cells are discarded, and the remaining concentrate — PRP — is prepared for injection into the scalp.

Platelets contain growth factors that play a role in the body's natural healing processes. When injected, these growth factors are understood to support cell repair and collagen production in the treated area. This means the treatment uses your own blood's natural components, without added drugs or synthetic materials.
PRP systems vary between providers in their collection and processing methods. Individual responses to PRP and PRF treatment vary, and a consultation is required to assess whether this treatment may be suitable for you.

Pain Management
A TGA-registered nerve-blocking device is used during injections to help manage discomfort. Additional pain management options are available on request for those with a lower pain threshold and can be discussed at consultation.

Cost & Suitability
The cost of PRP and PRF hair treatment varies depending on individual needs and treatment plans, and will be discussed in full at your consultation. As PRP and PRF use your own blood's biological components, some individuals consider these treatments as part of a broader approach to scalp and hair health. Individual responses vary, and a consultation is required to discuss whether this treatment may be appropriate for you and what realistic expectations look like.

PRP treatment may be suitable for individuals interested in natural, drug-free approaches to hair health. It's essential to consult with a healthcare provider to determine if PRP is the right option for your specific needs and goals. During your consultation at Nurse Nyma Aesthetics, we will assess your concerns and create a personalised treatment plan tailored to your individual circumstances.
